HMP Swaleside have a new vacancy for a Student Support and Recruitment Worker to act as an ambassador, promoting education to maximise the recruitment of students onto learning programmes and supporting their learning goals within the prison. As a successful Student Support and Recruitment Worker, you will provide appropriate guidance to students when selecting courses. You will also be confident in promoting the benefits of education and be actively involved in all aspects of student recruitment, attendance and programme marketing, working in partnership with HMPPS and other agencies to develop and deliver support services for our learners. The prison has a current capacity of approximately 1200. It is part of the Sheppey cluster which includes HMP Elmley and HMP Standford Hill. The education regime hours are from 8.30am – 11.30am and 1.45pm – 4.30pm Monday to Thursday. Fridays consist of education from 8.30am – 11am. Courses that are currently part of the curriculum at HMP Swaleside include but are not exhausted to: Functional Skills Maths and English, Entry 3 – Level 2, Business Studies, Hospitality, IT up to Level 3, Employability and Assertiveness Level 1, Peer Mentoring Level 2. Non accredited opportunities include Music, History, Literature, Theory of Engineering, Drama and other courses. The education department itself is a large, bright and open area that really radiates a college appearance and atmosphere. The department is on 2 levels and consists of fantastic facilities including a large kitchen and art rooms. HMP Swaleside’s latest Ofsted report was graded at Good – 2. The education department is involved in a variety of projects which include the Koestler Prize and summer art exhibition “view through a window” They are also involved in Poetry book projects and High Sherriff Awards as well as other internal competitions and recognition events. As a successful candidate you will: Good basic general education including GCSE (or) equivalent) in Maths and English at Grade C or above. Proven experience of presenting to groups. Good IT skills with experience of word processing, spread sheets, databases, email and internet systems. Accuracy and precision in written presentation. Sensitive to the complexities of prisons or closed institutions and have the ability to work positively within the inherent restraints. A willingness and ability to assume responsibility and to see through detailed tasks. Good communication skills both written and verbal. Commitment to students and students’ success. Able to motivate self and others. Have thinking ability: able to plan, communicate and problem solve effectively. Good organisational skills. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. The requirement of this role is to work across the whole prison estate, on all wings where education is delivered.
